Local SEO in Cameroon: how to get your business on Google Maps

A step-by-step guide to setting up and optimising a Google Business Profile so your Cameroonian business appears in Google Maps and local search results.

When someone in Douala searches “pharmacy near me” or someone in Bamenda searches “phone repair”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Being in that map is one of the most valuable (and free) marketing wins available to a local business.

Here’s how to get there.

Step 1: Create your Google Business Profile

  1. Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account you control long-term (not a staff member’s personal account).
  2. Enter your exact business name, as customers see it on your signboard.
  3. Choose the most accurate primary category (e.g. “Bakery”, “Software company”, “Beauty salon”). Add secondary categories for other services.
  4. Add your location. If customers visit you, add the address. If you travel to customers or work online, set a service area instead and hide the address.
  5. Add your phone number and website.
  6. Complete Google’s verification step. Your profile won’t fully appear until it’s verified.

Step 2: Complete every section

Profiles with complete information rank and convert better:

  • Opening hours, including special hours for holidays
  • Description: what you do, who you serve and where, in natural language
  • Services or products with short descriptions and, if possible, prices
  • Photos: your storefront, team, work and products. Real photos beat stock images.
  • Messaging and booking links, including WhatsApp where available

Step 3: Keep your details consistent everywhere

Google cross-checks your business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) across the web. Make sure they’re identical on:

  • Your website (usually in the footer and contact page)
  • Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn pages
  • Online directories and listings

Small differences, like an old phone number or a different spelling of your name, create doubt.

Step 4: Collect real reviews and reply to them

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking signals, and they persuade customers.

  • Ask happy customers to review you right after a successful job. Send your review link on WhatsApp.
  • Make it easy: put a QR code linking to your review page on receipts or your counter.
  • Reply to every review, positive or negative, politely and professionally.
  • Never buy or fake reviews. It breaks Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended.

Step 5: Stay active

Post updates, offers and new photos regularly. Answer questions in the Q&A section. An active profile signals that your business is open and trustworthy.

Step 6: Connect it to a good website

Your profile links to your website, and Google looks at that website to understand your business. A fast, mobile-friendly site that clearly states your services and location (and matches your profile details) strengthens your local ranking.

Conclusion

A Google Business Profile costs nothing but time, and it can bring a steady flow of local customers. Set it up carefully, keep it consistent, collect genuine reviews and connect it to a strong website. Need a website that supports your local SEO? See how we build them.
